Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez (December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957) better known simply as Diego Rivera was a prominent Mexican painter born in Guanajuato, Guanajuato, and husband of Frida Kahlo(1929–1939 and 1940–1954).

Diego Rivera is known as one of the "Big Three" muralists along with José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros . All three artists, as well as the painter Rufino Tamayo , experimented with fresco  on large walls, and elevated the art of the mural.

In 1930 Rivera was invited to go to the United States, and decided to exploit his new found fame north of the border, despite a deep rooted suspicion of gringos. In November 1930 he arrived in San Francisco to paint a mural for the Stock Exchange.

Rivera showed himself to be a precociously gifted artist and began to study in the evenings at the Academy of San Carlos at the age of ten. At sixteen Rivera joined a student strike at the Academy and was expelled. In due course he was officially reinstated, but never returned, instead working independently for the next five years.

Rivera began drawing when he was 3 -- a year after his twin brother died. He had been caught drawing on the walls and instead of punishing him, his parents installed chalkboards and canvas on the walls for the young painter to use.

He famously lived as a communist, as did is wife, Frida. His mural "Man at the Crossroads," began in 1933 for the Rockefeller Center in New York City, was removed after the press got a hold of the fact that the artist included a portrait of Vladimir Lenin.
