This quote conveys an important message, in regards to communications. In order to communicate effectively it requires cultivating certain skills through education. One cannot simply just be open minded to other cultures, they need to understand why they came about, the reason for it's development, and the historical context.
The goal is to view intercultural communication as a learning process for both host and guest cultures. The incorporation of the dual perspective is adequate. However, it fails to provide an in-depth discussion of the thought patterns and learning styles about the guest cultures.

Its seeks to understand how people from different countries and cultures behave, communicate and perceive the world around them. The findings of such academic research are then applied to 'real life' situations such as how to create cultural synergy between people from different cultures within a business or how psychologists understand their patients.
The definition of intercultural communication must also include strands of the field that contribute to it such as anthropology, cultural studies, psychology and communication.
