On the final day of President Obama’s 2009 trip to China, he was taken on a tour of the Badaling section of the Great Wall just outside Beijing. A widely distributed Associated Press photograph depicts the president standing pensively on a rampart, and while we have no way of knowing what precisely he was thinking, the Associated Press’s accompanying description offers a hint: “‘It’s magical,’ Mr. Obama said, walking down a ramp alone, his hands in his pockets. ‘It reminds you of the sweep of history and our time here on earth is not that long. More areas of the Great Wall of China will be opened to tourists, according to a report by state media agency, Xinhua. The Great Wall of China is some 21,196 kilometers long, but tourists (domestic and international) have been only able to officially access around 30 kilometers of the structure.

The Great Wall of China is a lot greater than anyone thought. The first formal measurement of the world's largest man-made structure revealed the wall was more than twice as long as previous estimates. In an archaeological survey that took five years to complete, China's State Administration of Cultural Heritage announced yesterday that the wall measures 21,196.18 km (13,170.69 miles).

Travelers wondering about the many sections of the Great Wall might not be surprised to know that the famous structure was built over a considerable period of time. In fact, work on the collective fortifications that make up the Great Wall of China began in 220 BC and didn’t stop until the mid-1600's. The famous Ming Dynasty, which was in power from 1368 to 1644, built the portions that are most highly visited today. These portions are also the strongest structurally and the best preserved.
