Among Eminem’s 13 Grammy Awards are three consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. According to Billboard, Eminem was the best-selling artist of the first decade of the 21st century, with more than 32 million albums sold in the United States.
Shortly after Eminem’s performance in the 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, his career experienced a significant breakthrough when legendary rap producer DR. DRE offered him a contract with a major recording label. With Dr. Dre serving as executive producer, Eminem released four albums between 1999 and 2004; each sold at least four million copies.
In 1999, after two years working with Dr. Dre, Eminem released The Slim Shady LP. The heavily hyped record became an instant success and went on to sell over three million copies.
It was also during this period of his life that Eminem began dating Kim Ann Scott, an old friend from high school, and in 1995 the couple had a daughter named Hailie Jade Scott. Inspired by the birth of his daughter to make a living as a rapper, in 1996 Eminem released his first independent rap album, Infinite.
When he finished touring in 2002, Eminem made his acting debut in the semiautobiographical 8 Mile. The gritty film was a critical and commercial success. The following year he won an Academy Award for “Lose Yourself,” a song featured in the movie.
Mathers had a turbulent childhood, marked by poverty and allegations of abuse. At age 14 he began rapping in clubs in Detroit, Mich., and, when unexcused absences kept him in the ninth grade for the third year, he quit school, determined to make it in hip-hop music.
His brutal hip-hop hooliganism has earned unprecedented media attention--both scorn and praise. In response to his May release, The Marshall Mathers LP (Interscope), the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation objected to such lyrics as "My words are like a dagger with a jagged edge / That'll stab you in the head whether you're a fag or les.... Hate fags? The answer's yes." Meanwhile, Newsweek called Eminem "arguably the most compelling figure in all of pop music."
Eminem is the stage persona of Marshall Mathers, a rapper who has gained international recognition for his biting wit and contempt for the media, as well as for being white in a musical field that is dominated by African Americans. Born in Missouri, Eminem spent much of his childhood moving back and forth between the Kansas City area and Detroit, Michigan, the city with which he has come to be identified.
