The 27 Club, also occasionally known as the Forever 27 Club, Club 27 or the Curse of 27, is the concept that many popular musicians have died at the age of 27, often as a result of "precipitous lifestyles that made them candidates for early self-destruction."

Malcolm Hale was just getting some singing gigs after being a member of Spanky and Our Gang when he was younger. He died when a space heater went out in the room where Malcolm was sleeping filling his closed off sleeping area with carbon monoxide. He was 27 years old.

Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967 and he became the voice of Generation X. He started out small in the Seattle grunge music scene which gained wider and wider recognition propelling Cobain’s group Nirvana to fame. By all accounts, this wasn’t what Cobain had expected, and he wasn’t comfortable with the attention. The shy singer complained of lifelong troubles with his stomach, battled addiction and by all accounts was often in a state of combat with his wife the controversial musician Courtney Love as well. Cobain was found dead a shotgun nearby. His death was legally ruled a suicide, but many of his fans believe otherwise. There’s been much speculation regarding the contentious relationship with Love. He was 27 years 44 days.

It’s very first member is alleged to be blues master, Robert Johnson, who was killed in 1938 when he drank a poisoned bottle of wine given to him by an angry spouse. He was 27 years old. The Forever 27 Club has since seemed largely interested in musicians of a high caliber. Between 1938 and 2011, 21 musicians have died at the age of 27 (roughly, one musician every three and a half years).

German psychologist Erik Erikson, developed a theory about the eight stages of psychosocial development, which happen from birth to 65 and older. According to Erikson, the psychosocial crisis that occurs between the ages of 18 and 35 is the struggle between intimacy and isolation. A person at this developmental stage may ask themselves, “Will I share my life with someone or be alone forever?” Theoretically, someone prone to substance abuse and isolation (creative types, hello) may find this crisis impossible to pass through, losing themselves, and even their lives during a crucial time, which just so happens to be around age 27.

Most members of The 27 Club have a history of drug and/or alcohol abuse. Sure, substance abusers are at greater risk for health complications or possible overdoses, but age may have something to do with it as well. According to psychotherapist Stephanie Sarkis, 27 may be the age that drug use starts catching up with the body. “People who have been using since their late teens and early 20s have really built up a tolerance for the drugs they are using. More drugs needed to produce the same high equals more chance of an overdose,” she explains.

Janis Joplin
She died of a probable heroin overdose..She was a lead vocalist and songwriter for Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Kozmic Blues Band and Full Tilt Boogie Band. Her age was 27 years & 258 days old and she died on October 4, 1970.

Jimi Hendrix
Autopsy showed he asphyxiated on vomit after combining sleeping pills with wine. He was a Pioneering electric guitarist, singer and songwriter for The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. His age was 27 years & 295 days old and he died on September 18, 1970.

Remembered as one of the greatest electric guitarists in history, Jimi Hendrix revolutionized rock and roll as both an artist and a producer during his brief four-year career. He died in London in September 1970, asphyxiating on his own vomit while sleeping. His girlfriend claimed that Hendrix, a heavy drug user who was particularly fond of LSD, had washed down a handful of sleeping pills with red wine before going to bed.

Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (1945-1973)
A founding member of the Grateful Dead, Ron McKernan, who went by the nickname Pigpen, did not share his bandmates’ predilection for LSD and other psychedelic drugs. However, his heavy drinking caused him to develop cirrhosis in 1970, and by 1972 his health had become so fragile he could no longer tour. He died of an internal hemorrhage in March 1973
