The American Academy of Dermatology was founded in 1938. It is the largest, most influential and most representative dermatology group in the United States.
Like all other organs, the skin is susceptible to a wide spectrum of injury and disease — mechanical injury; heat, cold, radiation (including sunlight) and chemical damage; infection by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa; infestation by mites, various parasitic worm larvae and fly eggs; tumorous (neoplastic) changes, both malignant and benign; damage from inadequate blood supply, from disease of the skin’s own blood vessels and from disease of its intrinsic nerves; congenital defects; and disturbances relating to general (systemic) disorders, including allergic reactions; auto-immune diseases; immunodeficiency diseases; and immune complex disorders. All these are within the province of dermatology and their management requires a comprehensive knowledge of most branches of medicine.
Dermatologists have gained the capacity to control fungal diseases of the skin, to recognize and treat skin cancers at an early stage, to control the life-threatening skin diseases pemphigus and lupus erythematosus, and to alleviate psoriasis.
dermatology, medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin. Dermatology developed as a subspecialty of internal medicine in the 18th century; it was initially combined with the diagnosis and treatment of venereal diseases, because syphilis was an important possible diagnosis in any skin rash
In the United States, many pediatric dermatologists (or general dermatologists with an interest in children’s problems) belong to the Society for Pediatric Dermatology. The purpose of this group, formed in 1975, is to promote, develop, and advance education and research on skin conditions in children and to improve care.
Another relatively benign but persistently insoluble dermatological problem, the appearance of warts, occurs most often among the middle-aged or older segment of the adult population. Modern dermatological research dating from the 1960’s has determined that warts are associated with particular viral strains (papillomaviruses).
Dermatologists can be involved in cosmetic and anti-aging procedures including injection fillers or Botox and cosmetic surgeries. Many dermatologists research conditions of the skin. Dermatologists are trained to do surgeries on the skin including laser surgery, cryosurgery, or electrosurgery.
A dermatologist is a physician or medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, management and treatment of diseases or disorders of the skin, hair or nails. These diseases might include acne, eczema, infections or skin cancer .
Probably the most commonly recognized dermatological disorder, acne, usually occurs among adolescents and young adults. Although this problem is likely to occur as part of the normal process of maturation, lack of proper care of acne may cause complications and lifelong scarring.
