Nigel's yoga is just one of the features of this exclusive yoga retreat located along a lake in lush northern Sri Lanka, an hour from the ancient city of Anuradhapura. The brain child of South African Giles Scott and Sri Lankan Viren Perera, who bought the property 15 years ago as "a nice piece of land" and a chance to "hang out and live in village culture" (they planted thousands of trees, from kumbuk to ebony, and landscaped its rushing brooks and weirs), today Ulpotha offers trips to temples, copious organic vegetarian meals, herbal teas served from boiling pots over a fire, a tree-house on the lake to sleep in if one wishes and a full platter of ayuredic treatments, including an oil drip on the forehead. What I most like about this retreat: the absolute cut-off from my urban lifestyle. To begin with, no electricity, but kerosene lanterns that line the maze of swept red-earth paths through the forest. To charge my computer, the staff brings it daily to the nearby village to plug it in, and returns it to me at night. All I hear are frogs, birds and the rushing sound of the brook that runs at the edge of my hut. It is like sleeping next to a waterfall, but in the most comfortable bed in the world (the mattresses are hand-made by Sri Lankans), removed from Internet, cell phones, contact lenses and all customary habits.

On this electricity-free yoga retreat, people got to experience life without electricity for a while. They say it is nice to be cut off from the rest of civilization having no phones, computers, or any of that. Electricity is definitely a magnificent aspect of human lifestlyes, but maybe a little time without it might be beneficial to some.

Richie's Ruhmkorff coil is an instrument consist[ing] of a primary coil of copper wire, with its core or bundle of iron wire; over this is a thick glass cylinder or bell; surrounding this bell is the secondary helix of fine silk-covered copper wire of various lengths wound upon a cylinder of gulfa percha and carefully insulated. The power of this machine is immensely greater than the Electrical machine; the discharges being so rapid that they produce the effect of a continuous flow; and with quantity so great that a leyden jar can be charged and discharged so rapidly that it is difficult for the ear to distinguish the sounds and with almost deafening effect.

This educational lecture was held in 1866. It talks about different machines that produced rapid firings of electricity. It is quite incredible how far technology in electricity has come from then. Instead of bulky machines that produce electricity we have outlets in almost every home that we can put cords in to allow the flow of electricity.

Units of electrical measure which have been used in scientific investigations for more than a decade have come into use in the practical application of electricity and have been accepted as necessary and sufficient in all countries. A formal international agreement upon the names and precise definitions of these units was necessary before it was desirable to fix them by legislative enactment. When you tie a free offer to the purchase of another product or service, its deceptive to increase the regular price of the purchased product to cover the cost of the free item. It would be deceptive to lure consumers with an offer of free electricity for the first month of a contract if the cost of the electricity would be factored into the following months bills.

Electricity is the flow of electrical power or charge. It is both a basic part of nature and one of our most widely used forms of energy. Electricity is actually a secondary energy source, also referred to as an energy carrier. That means that we get electricity from the conversion of other sources of energy, such as coal, nuclear, or solar energy. These are called primary sources. The energy sources we use to make electricity can be renewable or non-renewable, but electricity itself is neither renewable or nonrenewable.

In order for a current to exist in a conductor, there must be an electromotive force (emf) or potential difference between the conductor's ends. An electric cell, a photo-voltaic cell, and a generator are all sources of emf. Electrons spin around the center, or nucleus, of atoms, in the same way the moon spins around the earth. The nucleus is made up of neutrons and protons.
